  • 05/07/08--  James W. Barnes, age, 87, died May 6, 2008, at the Carl Vincent V.A. Hospital in Dublin, GA, after an extended illness. He was a native of Toombs County, a World War II Veteran of the Anti Aircraft 456 Battalion and the European Campaign, recipient of the Purple Heart and many other awards. Most of all, he was a proud and very patriotic Veteran. He was a farmer, carpenter, worked with the Toombs County Sheriffs Department, a member of Millikens Creek Lodge #302 of Cedar Crossing, and a member and deacon of Cedar Crossing Baptist Church. He was a wonderful father and grandfather.
    He was preceded in death by his wives, Pauline Bennett Barnes and Mary Mac Carter Barnes. Survivors are: four sons and daughters-in-law; Jim Paul and Carolyn Barnes of Uvalda, Pat and Wanda Barnes of Cedar Crossing, Randall and Brenda Barnes of Vidalia and Mike Barnes of Uvalda; three brothers and sisters-in-law; Troy and Jean Barnes of Vidalia, Henry and Shirley Barnes of Bloomingdale, and Harvey and Hortense Barnes of Brunswick, one sister; Annie Lou Finer of Cedar Crossing, five grandchildren and spouses; Derek and Amy Barnes of Uvalda, Heath Barnes of Cedar Crossing, Amy and John Morris of Cedar Crossing, Brandy and Jason Rabon of Snow Hill, Marilyn, and Shannon and Angle Youmans of Baxley; two step-daughters, Peggy Fountain of Vidalia and Joyce Lynn Brazell of Hazlehurst, several step grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
    Services for Mr. James W. Barnes will be Thursday, May 8, 2008, at 3:00 P.M., at the Cedar Crossing Baptist Church, with Rev. Reece Mincey officiating. Interment will follow in the Cedar Crossing Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the Cedar Crossing Baptist Church.on Wednesday Evening May 7, 2008, from 6:00 until 9:00 P.M.

  • 05/05/08--  Charlie Lee Cooper, Jr. age 63 of 1123 Hwy 178, Lyons died Monday May 5, 2008 in Community Hospice following an extended illness.  Mr. Cooper was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County and was a self employed mechanic. Survivors include one daughter Shea Phillips and her husband Chris of Vidalia, one brother: Clayton Cooper of Lyons, two sisters: Tina Hinson and her husband Al of Soperton, and Debra Hackle of Lyons, two grandchildren: Taylor Booth and Christopher Phillips, both of Vidalia.  Funeral services for Mr. Charlie Lee Cooper Jr. will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday May 7, 2008, at the Chapel of Jones-Stewart Funeral Home in Lyons with Rev. W. R, Connell officiating. Interment will follow in Boiling Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 6 until 8 PM on Tuesday evening, May 6, 2008. At other hours they will be at the residence of Shea and Chris Phillips, 1652 Fairway Dr. Vidalia.  Jones-Funeral Home of Lyons has charge of the arrangements.

 

  • 05/05/08--  Ruth Sterling Chester, 83 of Rockledge, died Saturday, May 3 2008.
    Mrs. Chester was born in Laurens County and was preceded in death by her parents, Tommie and Etta Graham Sterling; her husband, Eugene Chester; and her brother, Hones Sterling. She was a homemaker and a member of Blue Springs Baptist Church, Rockledge.
    Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Mitchell and Debbie Chester, of Woodbury, Connecticut, Mendell and Darlene Chester, of Soperton; a daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Charles Palmer, of Rockledge; 8 grandchildren, Lori Young, Leigh Oliver, Lesli Pope, Travis Chester, Nathan Chester. Kacey Chester, Tyler Chester and Haley Chester; 5 great-grandchildren, Mason Young, Colby Young, Emma Oliver, Lync Pope and Lakeli Pope; an aunt, Emma Nell Garnto; and 3 nephews, Don Sterling, Ron Sterling and Greg Sterling.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 7 in Blue Springs Baptist Church with the Reverends Ben Edwards, Timothy Green and Charles Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sammons Funeral Home, Soperton and may be reached at the home of Faye and Charles Palmer, 2046 Thairdell Road, Rockledge.  In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make donations to the Blue Springs Baptist Church Building or Cemetery Fund, c/o Virginia Young, 1410 Minter-Tweed Road, Dublin, Georgia.

  • 05/04/08--  George Walker, Age 56, of Higgston, Ga. died Sunday the 4th at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah, GA.  Funeral Services are incomplete and will be announced later by Smalley-Brown Funeral Home of Vidalia, GA.

 

  • 05/03/08--  Sara Harvey Garrett, age 76, died Friday the 2nd at meadows Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. She was a native of Bibb County, moving to Toombs County in 1964. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Leroy Garrett, and her parents, Edward Harvey and Mary Cobb Harvey. She was a homemaker and loving mother of eight children, collected bird houses, angels, and was a charter member of Faith Assembly Church of God, in Lyons, GA.  Mrs. Garrett is survived by her six sons and daughters-in-law; Robert E. and Marilynn Garrett of Dublin, Ga., Doyle and Jane Garrett of Chester, S.C., Joel T. and Joyce Garrett of Vidalia, Ga., Ralph and Betty Garrett of Lyons, Ga., Kenneth and Terri Garrett of Calamazoo, Michigan, and Phillip and Patty Garrett of Columbia, Maryland; two daughters and sons-in-law; Loraine and Ed Johnson of Sylvester, Ga., and Kim and Randy Sharpe of Louisville, Ga.; one brother and his wife, Edward and Marie Harvey of Canton, Ga., sixteen grandchildren, twenty great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.  Funeral Services for Mrs. Sara Harvey Garrett, will be Monday, May 05,2008, at 2:00 P.M., from the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with Reverend Chris Pugliese, Rev. Jesse Hathaway and Rev. James Scott officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery in Vidalia, GA.  Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday Evening, May 4, 2008, from 6:00 until 9:00 PM  Murchison Funeral Home of Vidalia is in charge of arrangements. 

 

  • 05/02/08--  David Bryson Frost, 47, of Glenwood died Wednesday the 30th Mr. Frost was a lifelong resident of Wheeler County and was a truck driver.  he was a member of Glenwood Church of God. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Paul Frost, daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Christian Lee of Dublin; stepsons Michael and his wife Brandi Davis of Eastman; Marty Davis; and Mathew and his wife Christy, all of Dublin; his parents Bryson and Alma Frost of Glenwood; his brother Ronnie Frost of Glenwood, and five grandchildren, Calla and Evie Lee, Ryleigh Davis, Kaitlyn and Laith Davis.  The funeral is Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Glenwood Church of God with burial in the Beulah Church Cemetery in Glenwood.  Visitation is Saturday from 6-8 pm at Sammons Funeral Home in Soperton.  An online memorial registry is available at www.sammonsfuneralhome.com.

 

  • 05/02/08--  Margaret Lynn, age 79, of 1218 Gus David Rd, Lyons died Wednesday 30th, at Community Hospice in Vidalia following a long illness. She was a native of Toombs County, living most of her life in the Lyons area. She was a housewife and a member of the Providence Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband: Gordon Lynn and a sister Kathleen Davis Weide. Survivors include one son, James (Mickey) Lynn of Lyons, and one grandson, Tony Michael Lynn of Pensacola, Fl. Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Sunday, May 4,2008, at the Providence Baptist Church with Rev. Taylor Merritt officiating. Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Jones-Stewart Funeral Home in Lyons from 6 until 8 PM on Saturday evening. Jones-Stewart Funeral Home of Lyons is in charge of the arrangements.

 

  • 04/30/08--  Lynette Roberson of Vidalia died on Monday the 28th at  Meadows Regional Medical Center. Vidalia, Ga. She was a  native of Toombs County, Ga.
    She was survived by Husband Ivey Roberson Jr. of Vidalia, Ga.  One daughter Angela Williams of Mt. Vernon, Ga. Two sons Jerome Wiggins and George Wiggins both of Vidalia, Ga.  Three brothers Tommy Lee Snell of Vidalia, Ga. Leartis Snell of Vidalia, Ga. and Rufus Snell, Jr. of Vidalia, Ga.  Host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday ( 05-03-08) 3:00 p.m. at Phillips Temple Church of God In Christ Church, Vidalia, Ga. Superintendent Freddie Lewis will give the eulogy.  Interment will be in the Poplar Spring Cemetery, Vidalia, Ga. Friends may pay respects at the funeral home Friday.

  • 04/30/08--  Alice Mae Mincey of Vidalia died on Tuesday the 29th at Meadows Regional Medical Center, Vidalia, Ga. She was a native of Emmanuel county, Ga.  She is survived by nephews Tommy Snell, Leartis Snell, and Rufus Snell, Jr. all of Vidalia, Georgia. Funeral services will be held Saturday (05-03-08) 3:00 p.m. at Phillips Temple Church of God in Christ, Vidalia, Ga.  Superintendent Freddie Lewis will give the eulogy.  Interment will be in the Poplar Spring Cemetery, Vidalia, Ga.  Friends may pay respects at the funeral Home Friday.  Vidalia Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

 

  • 04/30/08--  Everett Herndon, 80, of Adrian, died Tuesday, April 29.  Mr. Herndon was born in Altha, FL and had lived in Adrian for the past 31 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry Herndon and Dona Calhoun Herndon. He was a member of Zaidee Advent Christian Church and was retired.  Survivors include his wife, Reval Gilbreath Herndon; two sons, Lynn (Oneita) Herndon, Adrian, Warren (Carol) Herndon, Charleston, SC; daughter, Valita (Charley) Rauton, Lyons; two sisters, Daisy Atkinson, Jackson; Virginia Mansfield, Panama City, FL; six grandchildren, seven great-grand- children; and three great-great grandchildren.  Graveside services will be held in Zaidee Advent Christian Church Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday, May 2, with Gene Stewart officiating. The family will receive friends at Sammons Funeral Home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and may be reached at the family home, 3110 GA HW 86.   • 04/28/08--  Mildred Smith, of Kite, died Sunday, the 27.  Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and was preceded in death by her parents, William Shade and Manie Kea Hall; and her husband Theo Smith. She was a member of Corinth United Methodist Church, Johnson County.  Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sara Lynn and Howard G. Meeks, of Wrightsville; five sisters, Mathie Freeman, of Hartwell, Martha Grimes, of Twin City, Maxie Gross, of Macon, Travis Sears, of Dublin, and Nancy Clark, of Vidalia; a granddaughter, Rose (Bobby) Mobini, of Marietta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 30 in Corinth United Methodist Church with the Reverend Tommy Veal officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery with Sammons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Grayson Watson, Joel Watson, Phillip Watson, Tom Watson, Marty Sears, and John Henry Grimes.  A visitation will be held at the Church from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.   • 04/27/08--  Elizabeth Frizzelle Sumner, 95 of Soperton, died Saturday, April 26, 2008.
    Mrs. Sumner was born in Montgomery County and was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Sadie Bell McGahee Frizzelle; her husband, Charles Herbert Sumner, Sr.; and a son, Charles Herbert Sumner, Jr. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Soperton. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Shirley Jones Sumner, of Soperton; three grandchildren, Patti Sumner Heaton (Scott), of Soperton, Charles Herbert Sumner, III, of Sparta, and Elizabeth Sumner Huskins (Donald), of Eatonton; a sister, Johnnie Mac Frizzelle Mulling, of Baxley; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the First United Methodist Church, Soperton.  Burial will be in Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Sammons Funeral Home and may be reached at the home of Shirley Jones Sumner, 1026 Bell Avenue, Soperton.   • 04/23/08--  Johnny Tobler of Glenwood, Ga.  died Monday the 21st  at Accord Nursing Home, Glenwood, Ga. Native of Wheeler County, Ga. Survived his Cousin John C. Conaway of Glenwood, Ga, and a host of other loving relatives. Funeral services will be held Saturday ( 4-26-08) 11:30 a.m. at the St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Glenwood, Ga.
    Interment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Ga. Friends may pay respects at the funeral home Friday.  Vidalia Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

 

  • 04/23/08--  Jelks G. Sharpe, 68, of 154 Jelks Sharpe Rd., died, April 23, 2008, at his residence, after an extended illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County. He was a retired self-employed telephone cable splicer and a farmer, Mr. Sharpe loved his family and friends and enjoyed reading, fishing and arguing politics.  He is survived by his nephews: Elton Sharpe of Vidalia, Doyle Williams of Lyons, Johnny Sharpe of Uvalda, Larry Williams of Roswell, Bobby and Chester Sharpe of Moultrie and Gilbert Sharpe of Tennessee. Nieces are Shelvie Houston and Sue Houston of Moultrie and Carol Johnson of Augusta,  Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 24, 2008 at the funeral home.  Funeral Service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 25, 2008 from the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Henry Dowd officiating.  Interment: Sharpe Cemetery near Alston.  Murchison Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

 

  • 04/22/08--  Eliza Mae Harris Wadley, age 81, of Soperton, GA. died at her residence on Monday the 21st after an extended illness. She was born on April 07, 1927 in Treutlen County, Georgia to the late Sylvester and Leona Pullens Harris. She was married to the late Ralph Harris. She was member of the Outlaw Grove Baptist Church of  Soperton, GA.  She is survived by: Six Children: Carolyn Harden, Angela Harris, Ralph Harris, Jr., Terry Wadley, Perry Wadley all of  Soperton, Georgia, Wayne Wadley of Memphis, TN.  A sister: Leona Turner; Two brothers: Sylvester Harris , and Eddie Harris.  16 Grand children, 9 Great grand children and host of other relatives and friends also survived. The Family will receive friends at the Vincent R. Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 23,2008 from 6-7 p.m.  Funeral Service will be held @ 1:00 p.m. Thursday, the First Baptist Church, Soperton, GA . Rev Samuel Baker is Pastor.  Rev. Jerry Walden will officiate assisted by Rev. Muriel Bell.  The Interment will be in the Corsey Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Soperton, GA. Vincent R. Drummer Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

 

  • 04/21/08--  Mildred Ann Adams age 43 of Vidalia, died Monday night the 21st at Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia.  UPDATED 04/23/08 Native of Toombs County, Ga. Survived by two sons Antonio Madison and Daneil Jackson both of Vidalia.  Her father Sammy Adams of Lyons, Ga. Her mother Reba Jewel Ganitt of Sommervi1le, N.J.  One sister Patricia Belis of Sommervi1le, N.J. Six brothers Fredrick Davis, Marvin Adams, Randy Adams all of Sommervi1le , N.J. , Jeffrey Adams of Lyons, Ga. Jeffrey Bennett of Vidalia, Ga. and Sam Adams of Las Vegas, Nevada. Funeral services will be held Saturday (4-26-2008) 3:00 p.m. at Phillips Temple Church of God In Christ, Vidalia, Ga. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery, Soperton, Ga.
